Origin & history

Rose geranium is native to southern Africa, where it has long been used in traditional medicine for skin complaints among other things. Several Pelargonium species were carried to Europe in the seventeenth century and crossed deliberately for their scent. The plants grown for oil today descend from those crosses, and their exact parentage has been lost along the way.
