I'll admit it – I haven't always cared if my products were natural. I was raised by a mother who believed in natural products since way before it was cool (side note: at 70, she has better skin than most of my gen z friends), but personally, I've always had a brick-through-a-window approach when it came to skincare – if it works, it works, right?
Yes and no – even though I love-love-love my Embryolisse (and I always will!), when I developed my be-all, end-all face oil, I chose to go 100% natural and organic. Why? Even though we know that not all synthetic ingredients are bad, and not all natural ingredients are beneficial, going natural and organic offered some major benefits for both my skin and the environment. Here are some of my reasons:
-
Organic and natural skincare ingredients contain fewer harmful compounds.
Natural skincare products typically refrain from using chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances. This reduces the risk of certain skin irritations, allergies, and potential long-term health concerns associated with prolonged exposure to these known problem substances, many of which are already banned outside of the US. Again, not all synthetics are dangerous, just like not all natural substances are safe – but when we choose organic and natural, we opt out of many known offenders.
-
Organic, natural skincare is rich in nutrients:
Natural skincare ingredients are often chosen for their high concentrations of natural, plant-based ingredients that are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. These nutrient rich products work by nourishing to enhance the health of your skin. We are literally feeding our skin to get the results we want.
-
It's environmentally more sustainable:
Organic naural ingredients are more sustainable and eco-friendly than their conventionally grown natural counterparts. Pesticides aren't only harmful to us; they're harmful to the soil, plants, and animals. Choosing organic contributes to a more sustainable and eco-friendly beauty industry...
-
Organic Skincare supports organic farming:
...because choosing organic skincare supports these organic farming practices. Organic farms avoid the use of dangerous, synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, promoting healthier soil and biodiversity. By opting for organic natural products, you contribute to the growth of a more sustainable agricultural industry while keeping your skin safe from pesticide residues. Besides, no one ever talks about how good they feel supporting the petroleum jelly industry, or the mica industry. I live in the Catskills, and I love the organic farmers who are my friends and neighbors.
-
And reduces its environmental impact:
Again, when we choose organic, we support organic farms, and that reduces our impact –– it's a chain reaction! The absence of synthetic chemicals and pesticides in the cultivation of organic and natural ingredients helps minimize harm to ecosystems and water sources.
Choosing organic skincare products aligns with a holistic approach to personal care, as well as environmental protection. It's a conscious choice that emphasizes the importance of treating your skin with care, while minimizing the ecological footprint of your daily routine.
